Dr David Kumagaya

Dr David Kumagaya is a Consultant Psychiatrist experienced in the assessment and management of a range of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety disorders and PTSD. Dr Kumagaya also has considerable expertise working as a Psychogeriatrician in diagnosis and treatment of cognitive, behavioural and functional impairment in older adults. He has worked across both the public and private psychiatric sectors, and currently serves as Director/ Psychogeriatrician in private practice. Additionally, Dr Kumagaya is skilled in provision of medicolegal assessments and is accredited as a permanent impairment assessor with WorkCover NSW SIRA, and NSW Motor Accident SIRA.

Upon completion of undergraduate medical training, Dr Kumagaya commenced specialist training at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital with a focus on Psychiatry of old age. As an advanced trainee of Psychiatry of old age, he worked at several psychogeriatric units, including Canterbury Specialist Mental Health Service for Older People (SMHSOP), Concord Centre for Mental Health Jara, and Kenmore Hospital. He has also worked extensively within the Southern NSW Local Health District. Dr Kumagaya is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, and has completed a Certificate of Advanced Training in Psychiatry of Old Age with the College. Further, he obtained a Graduate Certificate in Applied Mental Health Studies specialising in Older Persons Mental Health.

Dr Kumagaya’s achievements have been recognised through his receipt of various national and international awards. He is the recipient of the Mental Health Education and Research Fund Award, the Health Education and Training Institute Older People’s Mental Health Scholarship, and the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatry Prize for Scholarly Project.
